Google Go Social With Search

We’ve long been advocates of the social side of the web with blogs, bookmarking and user generated content a huge part of the work we carry out for clients seeking to optimise their web presence or simply connect with their target audience on a more informal level. It seems Google have also jumped aboard the social media bandwagon with the launch of their SearchWiki. Read More About SearchWiki

Cribbing popular features from some of the web’s most established social networking properties, SearchWiki allows users to customize search results by re-ordering positions, deleting or adding sites to the returned pages and commenting on any site returned in the search results. The modifications made to the search results are preserved and the personalised order along with notes and comments presented each time the same search is actioned. These changes are only available to users signed into their own Google account but comments made by users can be viewed as a collective project by clicking on the ‘search all notes’ section.

As with all social media, the aim of Google’s customisable search results is to make the pages returned for each search query more relevant and personal to the user. Reactions have so far been mixed but expect more tweaks as the experiment gathers steam.
